Deck staining in Ontario typically costs $2 to $5 per square foot, depending on the condition of the wood and the type of stain used.
Fence staining usually ranges from:
$900 to $4,000+ depending on length, height, and accessibility
Large fences or detailed sections increase labour time.
Deck staining involves:
Intensive prep (cleaning, sanding, stripping)
Weather-dependent scheduling
Detailed application around railings and boards
Labour and prep are the main cost drivers.
Most decks need staining every:
2–3 years (transparent stain)
3–5 years (solid stain)
Ontario weather shortens lifespan due to moisture and temperature changes.
The best time is:
Late spring through early fall
Dry weather with moderate temperatures
Avoid staining in extreme heat or before rain.
Sometimes, but it depends on:
Whether the old stain is peeling
Type of previous coating
In many cases, sanding or stripping is required first.
